When Ademola Lookman joined the Super Eagles after his nationality switch was completed in 2022, not many would have predicted the extraordinary journey that awaited him. Now, with the 2024 CAF African Player of the Year award firmly in his grasp, the Nigerian forward’s rise to the top of the pinnacle of African Football serves as a testament to his resilience, commitment, and relentless pursuit of excellence. But behind Lookman’s ascent to the pinnacle of African football stands one man who saw the spark in him from the very beginning: Super Eagles interim head coach Austin Eguavoen.

Eguavoen was the first coach to hand Lookman his call-up to the national team, and over the years, he’s watched as the young talent blossomed into one of the most exciting players on the continent. In an exclusive interview with Afrikaanspective, Coach Eguavoen reflects on Lookman’s evolution, his pride in the player’s achievements, and what makes him stand out in a team full of stars.

Early Signs of Greatness: A Professional from the Start

Eguavoen’s admiration for Lookman goes beyond his footballing ability. For the coach, it was clear from the outset that the forward had something special—a combination of talent, dedication, and a mindset that would set him apart.

“Yes, you could tell from the start,” Eguavoen says, recalling his first impression of Lookman. “First was his commitment, and attitude to the game. He was a pure professional.”

At a time when many young players might be distracted by the fame and distractions that come with being in the spotlight, Lookman’s focus and work ethic were immediately evident. Eguavoen recognized that Lookman wasn’t just another promising talent—he was a player with the potential to go all the way.

A Defining Moment: The 2023 AFCON

While Lookman’s talent was undeniable, it was during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast that he truly proved his mettle for Nigeria. Despite Nigeria finishing as runners-up, Lookman’s performances throughout the tournament were nothing short of exemplary.

“I watched him closely during the AFCON,” Eguavoen recalls. “He hardly put a foot wrong.”

In a tournament packed with talent and high-stakes moments, Ademola Lookman stood out as a true game-changer. From clutch goals to perfectly timed assists, he was at the heart of the action when it mattered most. His calmness under pressure and knack for delivering in crucial moments distinguished him from his peers.

Eguavoen was impressed by how the young player navigated the challenges of playing on such a big stage. “You could see a maturity in his game. He didn’t just play for himself—he played for the team, and that’s what made him stand out,” the coach adds.

The Moment of Commitment: A Decision That Changed Everything

Lookman’s decision to represent Nigeria was a defining moment in his career, one that has shaped his journey ever since. The forward was born in England to Nigerian parents, and though he had the option to represent either country, his decision to embrace his Nigerian heritage has been one of the most significant choices of his life.

“It’s about someone making up his or her mind,” Eguavoen says when reflecting on the decision. “The moment we had that meeting in London, you could see someone who had made up his mind and was ready to go. For him, there was no looking back.”

For Lookman, representing Nigeria wasn’t just about playing football—it was about embracing his identity and taking on the responsibility that comes with it. Eguavoen sees this commitment in everything Lookman does, from his performances on the field to his connection with the fans.

Performance, Consistency, and a Winning Mentality

While Lookman’s technical ability has always been evident, it is his consistency and mentality that have made him one of Africa’s finest. Over the past year, Lookman has been a standout performer for both club and country, constantly rising to the occasion.

“Ademola Lookman’s performance for both country and club speaks volumes,” Eguavoen states. “He rises to every occasion, he is either scoring or assisting and keeps a positive attitude.”

Lookman’s unwavering commitment to improving his game and making a difference for his team has been one of the keys to his success. Whether it was a match-winning goal or a critical assist, Lookman has consistently shown up when it matters most—helping Nigeria and his club achieve new heights.

Eguavoen sees something more in Lookman than just his ability to score goals or create assists. “He’s a player who doesn’t shy away from big moments,” the coach says. “He embraces the responsibility of being a key player and steps up when needed.”

Navigating the Super Eagles’ Star-Studded Lineup

Lookman’s ability to shine in a team full of established stars has also been a remarkable aspect of his growth. With players like Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, and Wilfred Ndidi in the squad, there’s no shortage of talent in the Super Eagles’ ranks. Yet, Lookman has carved out his own identity within the team, ensuring that his contributions are always felt.

“Every player has a task within the team function,” Eguavoen explains. “They all perform their individual tasks before the collective task, so it’s not about one player.”

Despite the presence of other star players, Lookman has never allowed his individual contributions to become overshadowed. His ability to complement the strengths of his teammates, while still making an impact, has made him a vital cog in the Super Eagles’ system.

An Inspiration for the Next Generation

Lookman’s success isn’t just a personal triumph—it’s a beacon of hope for younger players in Nigeria and across Africa. His journey from promising talent to African Player of the Year serves as proof that hard work and determination can lead to greatness, no matter where you come from.

“This is another big achievement for Nigerian football,” Eguavoen says. “It will definitely inspire our players, especially the younger ones, to dream of the same feat someday.”

For young footballers in Nigeria, Lookman has become an example of what’s possible when you embrace your potential, work tirelessly, and stay true to your roots. His rise is a symbol of possibility, reminding the next generation that they too can achieve greatness.

Versatility: A Tactical Advantage for the Super Eagles

One of Lookman’s most valuable assets has been his versatility. Able to play across various attacking roles, whether as a winger or centrally, Lookman’s adaptability has allowed Eguavoen to tweak tactics and formations without the need for substitutions.

“Definitely a plus for any team to have a player of such quality,” the coach says. “It has helped us switch formation during matches without substitution.”

In a game where flexibility is key, Lookman’s ability to adapt to different positions has given the Super Eagles a tactical edge, allowing them to be more fluid and unpredictable during matches. This versatility has been integral to Nigeria’s recent successes and remains a key asset moving forward.

    A Deep Connection to Nigeria

Lookman’s bond with Nigeria runs deep. Beyond his performances on the pitch, his love for the country and its people has been evident from the moment he committed to playing for the Super Eagles. He speaks Yoruba, his father’s native tongue, and has embraced the culture and identity that come with wearing the green and white jersey.

“From when he made up his mind to play for us, his connection to Nigeria has been wonderful,” Eguavoen says. “He speaks a few words in Yoruba and feels very much at home and wants to win something for Nigeria to be remembered for.”

For Lookman, representing Nigeria is about more than football—it’s about making his mark on the history of Nigerian football and leaving a legacy for future generations.

A Call to Action for African Players

Lookman’s success is also a reminder of the importance of African players representing their countries of origin. His decision to play for Nigeria despite opportunities to play for other nations is a powerful message to other players across the globe.

“Many African players in Europe should emulate Ademola Lookman and others to play for their father’s land,” Eguavoen says. “But the country should also be ready to look after these players. There have been situations where players decide to represent their father’s land and regret.”

Lookman’s choice serves as a call to action, urging both players and nations to invest in the future of African football. By supporting and nurturing homegrown talent, Africa can continue to produce world-class players who will inspire future generations.

A Player Nigeria Is Proud to Have

As Lookman’s journey continues to unfold, Coach Eguavoen’s words say it all: “Lucky to have him.”

This simple yet profound statement encapsulates the feeling of every Nigerian football fan who has watched Lookman’s transformation from a promising youngster to Africa’s best player. Lookman’s success is not just a personal triumph—it’s a victory for Nigerian football and a reminder that, with hard work and dedication, dreams can be realized on the biggest stages.

As Lookman prepares for the next chapter of his career, one thing is certain: the best may still be yet to come.
